Replacement of an aging middle school and redevelopment of a three property, multi-facility campus in downtown Lewes. The design provides flexible and adaptable standard classrooms supported by various collaborative spaces - including a commons for each grade, seminar rooms for small group learning, individual supervised learning, and a learning stair that connects the entire school. Responding to the site boundaries and context, the school takes on a non-traditional form with multiple facades and a modern aesthetic.
The initial concept was to construct the replacement school on same property as the school scheduled to be demolished. Our team proposed exploration of a second option whereby the new school would be erected on another district-owned property. This secondary scheme was brought forward to take advantage of economies accomplished through consolidation of site and building services; and more notably to allow a significant advancement in the overall project schedule by not having to wait for demolition of the existing school.
