This 20-classroom Ninth Grade Academy addition includes general education classrooms, Sussex Consortium Rooms, offices and other shared spaces. The main challenge was constructing the addition without interrupting the operation of the existing school. This was executed by a connecting corridor which creates a learning court/plaza. The plan design rectifies the existing façade and major road orientations and creates a commons learning space interior to the building. The street façade reflects the vernacular of the existing school while the courtyard has a more modern look. The cafeteria expansion encloses an existing portico, creating efficient usable seating space while preserving the appearance of the school.
